Yackandandah Water Supply Project - Community Information Session
North East Water has worked closely with the Indigo Shire Council and the Yackandandah Community Reference Group over the past 12 months to investigate viable solutions for Yackandandah's supply issues.
In 2007 North East Water's Water Supply Demand Strategy highlighted concerns that future growth in the Yackandandah region, combined with increased environmental requirements, would place significant pressure on the existing water resources and supply infrastructure in Yackandandah.
The Corporation has since engaged an independent consultant to investigate and evaluate water supply options for Yackandandah.
This work has identified two key options for supplying Yackandandah, both of which involve connections with other water sources.
The preferred option for supply to Yackandandah is to provide water through the Wodonga water supply via Baranduda.¦nbsp; Alternatively, if there is insufficient capacity in the Wodonga system, Yackandandah would be supplied with raw water from the Kiewa River at Kiewa/Tangambalanga, which would be piped to the existing Yackandandah Water Treatment Plant for treatment and distribution.Â
The consultant's report identified that building additional storage at Yackandandah would prove less sustainable than the interconnection options.Â
North East Water will now undertaken a review of its Wodonga system infrastructure to ascertain its capacity to service Yackandandah residents.Â
The Corporation will seek community feedback on the consultant's report at a meeting of the Residents Association to be held on Wednesday 1st April 2009, at the Java Cafe, High Street, Yackandandah, commencing at 7.30pm.North East Water will present the outcomes of the Concept Report into Water Supply for Yackandandah.Â
Interested residents are encouraged to attend this meeting and ask questions or seek further information regarding this project.
North East Water will continue to work with residents, including the Community Reference Group to update them on this project as it progresses.
It is anticipated that the implementation and construction works for this project will be included in North East Water's, next Water Plan, for the period 2013-2018.Â
