Sewerage solution a step closer

12 Apr 2012

Wangaratta’s Parfitt and Wilson Road areas moved a step closer to a sewerage solution last night (Wednesday 11 April) with a well attended information session hosted by North East Water.

Almost 50 people attended the session, which outlined the options for providing sewerage services to the two areas of the city.

Properties in the two areas currently use a combination of septic tanks, package treatment plants and private pressure sewer, with many of the septics treating only toilet waste and many of the properties too small to contain the effluent.

North East Water Managing Director, Craig Heiner, said household water from bathrooms, kitchens and laundries in the areas currently entered the Ovens and King rivers via stormwater drains.

“Clearly this is unacceptable from an environmental and public health point of view, and we’re pleased that North East Water is in a position to offer a solution to the situation,” he said.

Mr Heiner said the Corporation had identified pressure sewer as the best way to service the areas, which are impacted by high water tables.

“Pressure sewer doesn’t require gravity for the effluent to flow, which means the pipework will not have to be installed deep under the ground where it would potentially impact on the water table,” he said.

Mr Heiner said North East Water was pleased with the attendance at last night’s information session.

“It shows to us that people in these areas are interested in a solution to the issue,” he said.

“The general feeling we took away from the session was positive, and I’m looking forward to seeing this project progress.”

North East Water now plans to survey residents on their willingness to contribute and connect to a pressure sewer scheme.

Based on the survey results, the Corporation will prepare a final business case that should enable construction in 2013.
