Group reviews water supply future

21 May 2012

North East Water has updated the Yackandandah Community Reference Group on three key Corporation projects that aim to increase water security for the the town.

The Corporation’s Managing Director, Craig Heiner, acknowledged the valuable input of the group, which has worked with North East Water for a number of years to review options to secure the town’s water supply.

Mr Heiner said the group’s contributions had been invaluable in the formulation of the Water Supply Demand Strategy 2012, the One Resource pilot project focussing on the use of groundwater to supplement Yackandandah’s supply, and Water Plan 2013-18, which includes the expansion of the Yackandandah recycled water scheme.

“These three strategic projects work together to identify what work needs to be done to secure our supplies, how we might source the additional water required, and how we will achieve our objectives in terms of infrastructure,” Mr Heiner said.

“It was an informative session in which we updated the group on how the projects relate to Yackandandah specifically.”

The Water Supply Demand Strategy 2012 was initially prepared in 2007, and has recently undergone its five-yearly review. It is a 50-year strategy that aims to balance water demand and supply to secure urban needs in communities across the region, including Yackandandah.

One Resource is a holistic approach to water resources that promotes the concept of fit-for-purpose products. The involvement of Yackandandah as a pilot community for One Resource has highlighted to important role of groundwater in increasing future town supplies.

Water Plan 2013-18 is a five-year business plan that identifies the infrastructure, service standards and tariff requirements over the regulatory period. The plan proposes a project to expand the capacity of Yackandandah’s existing recycled water scheme.
