Water treatment, reducing waste, solar power and biodiversity will be among the topics of a major environmental education event in Yarrawonga tomorrow.
More than 180 grade 5 students from the Yarrawonga area and beyond will attend the North East School Environment Day at J.C Lowe Oval, Piper St, on Thursday 3 May from 10am to 2pm.
The event is being coordinated by the North East School Environment Education Directory (SEED) as the second of its annual program of four regional workshops for 2012.
SEED is a uniquely North East Victorian initiative, run in partnership by North East Water, North East Catchment Management Authority and NevRWaste.
The School Environment Day will involve students from four primary schools - Tungamah, St Josephs Cobram, Yarrawonga and Sacred Heart - as well as presenters from the three partner organisations.
It will also involve workshops from Moira Shire, Landcare, Anything Solar, the Department of Primary Industries, the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Parks Victoria, Cleanaway and Goulburn Valley Water.
Among other things, the attending students will learn:
The School Environment Day provides a great opportunity for organisations to educate the community about their area of environmental sustainability and for schools to gain knowledge and understanding in these areas.Â
The SEED website provides many curriculum materials and links to further information to support the learning of both teachers and students in environmental education enabling the learning from this day to continue back in the classrooms later.
