Boil Water Advisory – Harrietville

05 Feb 2013

North East Water is urging residents in Harrietville to boil their drinking water following the ongoing Harrietville-Feathertop bushfire in the Upper Ovens River Catchment.

The quality of raw water has been compromised by sediment pushed into the river by fire fighting practices.

Executive Manager Operations, John Day, said the Corporation can’t guarantee disinfection of the water that’s being extracted from the river.

"Our normal treatment processes in Harrietville aren’t designed for such dirty water that’s now flowing into the system", said Mr Day.

"As a precaution, we are urging people to bring water to a rolling boil if they intend to use it for drinking, food preparation, ice making or teeth cleaning."

"This applies especially to those most susceptible to risk, such as people with lowered immunity, infants and the elderly."

Mr Day added, "We’ve chosen the boil water advisory over the option of water carting and restrictions because further hot weather is forecast this week, allowing more flexibility for customers."

"North East Water will be closely monitoring the situation over the coming weeks, and will consider restrictions if water quality deteriorates further through heavy rainfall in the catchment."

"We understand the inconvenience that a boil water advisory places on our customers and we thank all residents for their understanding and cooperation during this period", said Mr Day.

The Boil Water Advisory is effective from midday on 5th February 2013 and will apply until further notice.

This Boil Water Advisory is issued in consultation with the Department of Health.
