North East Water will lift Myrtleford’s seasonal Boil Water Notice today (Thursday, 1 May).
The notice will not be reinstated until the beginning of November.
Myrtleford has had an ongoing Boil Water Notice in place since August 2007 under the direction of Department of Human Services.
Eariler this year, the Victorian Minister for Health, Daniel Andrews, replaced the year-round notice with a seasonal advisory following negotiations with North East Water and the Myrtleford community reference group.
North East Water Operations Manager, Fiona Smith, said the seasonal notice would minimise the risk to public health by advising customers to boil their water during the warmer months.
“The system is more susceptible to detections of E. coli when the weather gets hot, making it difficult for us to comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act,” she said.
“We are continuing to work with the reference group to investigate and address the problems with the system with the aim of upgrading and improving the water treatment process to ensure ongoing compliance with the Act.”
“Once we can achieve and maintain compliance, the Department of Human Services will review the need for a seasonal Boil Water Advisory.
“Naturally if there are any E. coli detections between May and November, we will need to put in a temporary Boil Water Notice, but with cooler weather this is less likely.”
Ms Smith said customers should continue to bring their water to a rolling boil before drinking and cooking until 1 May.
