Murray towns to go to Stage 2 restrictions
Murray towns to go to Stage 2 restrictions

Customers in North East Water’s Murray River towns will soon have extra watering time when they are reduced to Stage 2 restrictions on 17 May.

The Corporation’s Drought Response Manager, Terry Wisener, said that usage had declined due to cooler weather, and there was enough water in reserve in the system to allow a lower level of restriction over winter.

“The community’s excellent efforts to conserve water over the summer and autumn has allowed us the flexibility to relax restrictions over the cooler months,” he said.

“However with the Hume and Dartmouth dams still at low levels, next summer’s restrictions will depend largely on winter and spring rainfall.

“We will be monitoring the system closely to ensure we are putting in the appropriate restrictions at the appropriate times.”

Stage 2 restrictions still do not allow lawn watering, but offer customers more days to be able to water gardens.

They will apply to the towns of Tallangatta, Bellbridge, Wodonga (and surrounds), Kiewa, Tangambalanga, Rutherglen, Wahgunyah, Bundalong, Yarrawonga, Tungamah, Devenish and St James.

Under Stage 2 restrictions:

  1. A garden area must not be watered except by means of:
  • A manual watering system which operates only as required for four hours per allocated day within 6.00am and 8.00am and 5.00pm and 10.00pm on alternate days; or
  • An automatic watering system, which operates only as required within, the hours of midnight and 4am on alternate days.

2.A lawn area must not be watered at any time.

3.A garden area may be watered using a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle, or a watering can or bucket filled either by a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle, or directly from a tap, at any time.

Watering on alternate days refers to odd-numbered houses on odd-dated days, and even-numbered houses on even-dated days.Any property can water on the 31st day of the month.
